ANIME OF THE MONTH >december<

SORA NO OTOSHIMONO

The plot revolves around a boy in the town of Soramani named Tomoki Sakurai who is one day invited by his childhood friend Sohara Mitsuki and Eishirō Sugata (the leader of "The New World" club) to come at midnight to witness a strange object seen crossing through their town's sky. Tomoki goes alone and as the strange object comes close, Sugata calls to warn him to get away from it. What falls from the sky is a creature called an Angeloid named Ikaros.
Ikaros imprints on Tomoki after he rescues her from being destroyed by falling debris. She introduces herself as a "Pet-Class" Angeloid and offers to fulfill any wishes Tomoki may have. In time, she begins to pick up human characteristics from her involvement with Tomoki and more of her past is revealed. We soon discover that Ikaros has left "the Heavens" in disarray, and various Angeloids are sent to retrieve her.

Characters

Humans
Tomoki Sakurai (桜井 智樹, Sakurai Tomoki?)
Voiced by: Sōichirō Hoshi
The main character, who wants nothing more than a peaceful and quiet life in town. However, Tomoki's life is forever changed when he meets with Ikaros. While Tomoki has an extremely perverted side, he is usually a kind and sincere person. He takes on the task of helping Ikaros become more human. He has a re-occurring dream where he loses his angel. The series begins with Tomoki experiencing a re-occurring dream; it is eventually discovered that Tomoki's dream serves as a gateway between the human world, and the world of Synapse.
Sohara Mitsuki (見月 そはら, Mitsuki Sohara?)
Voiced by: Mina.
Tomoki's childhood friend who lives across the road from him, often goes to his house in the morning to wake him up. As a child she was constantly ill and thus had few friends. She is continually jealous of Tomoki's relationships with the various Angeloids and generally acts on this jealousy by "Karate-Chopping" Tomoki; however, she also does that whenever he's being perverted in her presence.
Eishirō Sugata (守形 英四郎, Sugata Eishirō?)
Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki
The leader of a club called "The New World". Sugata is a scientist of sorts and is researching the Angeloids. He lives in a tent near a river. He continually praises various explorers, and his current goal is to explore the "New World". He is highly eccentric and has some past involvement with Mikako's family.
Mikako Satsukitane (五月田根 美香子, Satsukitane Mikako?)
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki
An upperclassman to Tomoki and Mitsuki and the President of the Student Council. She is Sugata's childhood friend and the heiress of a Yakuza family. She is manipulative, cunning, and highly intelligent.

Angeloids

Ikaros (イカロス, Ikarosu?)
Voiced by: Saori Hayami
Introduced as a "Pet-Class Angeloid, Type Alpha", she becomes bonded to Tomoki at the beginning of the story (symbolized by the invisible chain leading from her collar to Tomoki's hand). Ikaros displays a very submissive, melancholic personality, and is completely subservient to Tomoki's wishes. Ikaros possesses the ability to grant seemingly any wish through the use of several techno-magical cards. Despite her passive appearance, Ikaros has displayed moments of aggressiveness when Tomoki's life appears to be in danger. She weighs 48 kilograms, stands at 162cm and her wing type is listed as "Variable". Her "Variable" wings are extremely valuable and are highly desired by Synapse. While she begins the series with a poor grasp of human emotion, she eventually begins to acquire emotions and begins to fall in love with Tomoki.
As the story progresses it becomes clear that Ikaros is not merely a "Pet-Class" Angeloid, she is actually a "Battle-Class" Angeloid. She takes little harm when she is shot, she is capable of flight at Mach 24, and is able to withstand pressure better than most submarines. In the past, she was called the "Uranos Queen" and terrorised Synapse due to her immense power and battle capabilites. She was originally sent to Earth as a weapon of judgment and is responsible for destroying the tower of Babel. Ikaros can generate a nigh-invincible energy shield called 'Aegis'. She also possesses two powerful weapon systems; 'Artemis', a series of multi-directional, homing energy projectiles fired from her wings, and 'Apollon', a bow that can fire energy-charged arrows capable of obliterating a small country in a single shot. A halo also appears above her head when she's in battle mode.
Nymph (ニンフ, Ninfu?)
Voiced by: Iori Nomizu
Introduced as the "Beta Angeloid: Electronic Warfare Type", Nymph mysteriously appears in Tomoki's house. She is condescending towards humans whom she regards as "bugs". Unlike Ikaros, Nymph can completely conceal her wings. She weighs 29 kilograms, stands at 139cm and her wing type is listed as "Not Variable" and "Stealth". She is originally sent to return Ikaros to the "New World", however, as she is less powerful than Ikaros, she is unable to do so. She soon develops feelings for Tomoki. After the Gamma Angeloids attempt to kill her, she betrays Synapse and assists Tomoki, and moves into his home. Her wings are torn off by the Gamma Angeloids, but are regrown when she accepts Tomoki as her new master.
As an electronic warfare type Angeloid, she has the ability to hack computer systems as well as other Angeloids. She can also fire a high-power energy beam called 'Paradise Song' from her mouth.
Astraea
Introduced as the "Delta Angeloid: Close Combat Type", Astraea is sent by Synapse to dispose of Tomoki after he violates one of their rules. She is something of an airhead and has limited intelligence. However, when she is ordered to eliminate Nymph, she breaks off her chain and betrays Synapse, engaging in combat with Chaos.
Chaos
Introduced as the "Second Generation Angeloid, Type Epsilon" Chaos is an antagonist. She uses illusion techniques to create a false version of Tomoki, who she uses to manipulate Nymph and Ikaros. When she learns that both Ikaros and Nymph betrayed Synapse because they love Tomoki, she interrogates both of them as to what love is while attempting to destroy them. She is defeated by Ikaros and left in a deep chasm in the sea.
Harpies
The harpies are a pair of Angeloids introduced as "Gamma Angeloids, Ambush Type". They serve as antagonists and are responsible for tearing off Nymph's wings.

Another appearance!!!what the...

KUROSHITSUJI

Black Butler (黒執事, Kuroshitsuji?) is a manga written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. Since its debut on September 16, 2006, it has been serialized in Square Enix's shōnen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy. The series follows Sebastian Michaelis, a demonic butler who is obligated to serve Ciel Phantomhive, the twelve-year-old head of the Phantomhive noble family, due to a contract he made with Ciel. It was announced in July 2008 that an anime adaption, directed by Shinohara Toshiya and produced by A-1 Pictures, was expected. It premiered in October 2008, and has since ended with 24 episodes. However, at the Sono Shitsuji, Shūshō: Saigo no Bansan o Anata to Tomo ni (その執事、終章 ~最後の晩餐を貴方と共に~?, "That Butler, Last Chapter ~a last supper with you~") event on June 14, 2009, it was announced that the anime will be returning for a second series. Seiyū Junichi Suwabe confirmed this news on his official blog later that day. The series has been licensed for an English release by Yen Press and will be published in Yen Plus' August 2009 issue for the magazine's first anniversary.

STORY

In a manor house on the outskirts of Victorian era London, butler Sebastian Michaelis serves Ciel Phantomhive, the twelve-year-old head of an English noble family and a toy and candy empire, who serves directly under the Queen. Sebastian carries out any task required by his master while solving the problems plaguing England with ease and perfection, because of his demonic lineage and Faustian contract with his master.

Primary
Twelve-year-old Ciel Phantomhive is the current head of the English Phantomhive noble family and the Funtom toy and confectionery company. Under his lead, the company grew into a major corporation. Ciel is tasked with solving problems plaguing London under Queen Victoria's orders. He is helped by Sebastian Michaelis, a demon bound to Ciel's will by a contract. Sebastian serves as the Phantomhive butler. Until the terms of their contract are met, Sebastian must keep Ciel alive.
[edit] Sebastian Michaelis
Sebastian Michaelis (セバスチャン・ミカエリス, Sebasuchan Mikaerisu?) is the series' antihero. He is the butler of the Phantomhive household and acts as Ciel's bodyguard, two jobs he is completely devoted to. However, he is not overly concerned about Ciel's well-being as he insults and even harms Ciel to see his reaction. At one point, he releases venomous snakes even though he knows Ciel is in the area and could be bitten, he acknowledges this, saying "Any game becomes boring when it lacks thrills".
Sebastian often describes himself through the phrase "Because I am one hell of a butler" (わたしはあくまで執事ですから, Aku made shitsuji desu kara?). The phrase plays on the word "demon" (あくま, akuma?) and the phrase "to the end" (あくまで, aku made?). It can also translate to "I am a demon and a butler". He is highly skilled in any area and handles every task, no matter how impossible it is, as well as any problem that arises from the errors of the other staff with ease, stating it is only natural as the butler to the Phantomhive family. This is due to the fact he is a demon bound by a Faustian contract to abide by Ciel's will. A sign similar to the one marking Ciel's right eye can be found on Sebastian's left hand, which has been used on one occasion to twist the arm of a kidnapper without touching him. The name Sebastian is in fact a temporary name given to him by Ciel and was previously held by Ciel's dog. He bears a striking resemblance to Ciel's father. In the anime adaption, Sebastian can take the form of a crow or a cat. Sebastian's true demonic form has not been fully revealed. However, a depiction of sharper teeth, high-heeled boots, and elongated nails have been given. In the anime, his true form is also shown, but only briefly in glimpses at the finale, sporting high-heel boots and claw-like hands (the appearance of a goatee is given, but was subsequently discovered to be a animation error). In the manga adaptation, Sebastian appears to Ciel to form the contract in his true form, while in the anime version, he appears as a crow. He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa on the first drama CD and Daisuke Ono in the anime adaption and on the second drama CD.[1][2][3] His name is similar to that of Father Sebastien Michaelis, who compiled a hierarchy of demons in Hell.
[edit] Ciel Phantomhive
Earl Ciel Phantomhive (シエル・ファントムハイヴ, Shieru Fantomuhaibu?) is the business-savvy, twelve-year-old head of the English Phantomhive noble family, taking over after the deaths of his parents, Lord Vincent and Lady Rachel Phantomhive. He runs Funtom Company, which manufactures toys and sweets, with the later addition of a food branch after winning a Royal Warrant. His right eye, which is usually covered with a black eyepatch, bears a pentacle, the sign of the Faustian contract he has made with the demon Sebastian.
Prior to meeting Sebastian, he was a slave and a sacrifice in a cult ritual. During one particular instance where Ciel was being tortured, his hatred for his torturers culminated in his accidentally summoning Sebastian. He then commanded the demon to kill all the people in the room. During his time as a slave, a mark was burned into his back; in the anime adaption, it is found on his left side, near his chest. He does not want anyone to see this mark and appears to not enjoy physical contact, though he tolerates Sebastian and does not complain when the demon picks him up or holds him. If he is stressed, he will slap someone touching him away, proclaiming, "Don't touch me so easily!" This is a negative influence of the trauma he underwent during his time as a slave.
He is portrayed as emotionless, though he occasionally expresses concern for the well-being of the few close to him. He worries for Sebastian's well-being; however, he ultimately looks at Sebastian as a pawn. There have been times when he wishes for Sebastian to fail a task or request, for humor's sake. He is close to his cousin and fiancée Elizabeth, seeing her as an important friend and someone he needs to protect.
Ciel turns thirteen part of the way through the story, though is hesitant to celebrate his birthday due to the death of his parents occurring the same day. This tragedy changed him, making him not want to lose anyone important again.
At the end of the anime adaptation, with his revenge completed, Ciel awaits for Sebastian to devour his soul. His final order is to make the process as painful as possible.
As a side note, Ciel appears to enjoy drinking tea (he is adept at distinguishing between different types) and eating sweet desserts. In the manga, he knows how to use guns and even keeps one under his pillow, sometimes bringing a concealed gun with him on missions and has been shown to be a proficient hunter. He has asthma, which was inherited from his mother. He is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro on the first drama CD and Maaya Sakamoto in the anime adaption and on the second drama CD.[1][2][3]
[edit] Supporting
[edit] Phantomhive household
The Phantomhive Estate belongs to the English noble family Phantomhive and is located outside the city of London. The Phantomhive family is a secret executive agency controlled directly by the Queen and are often referred to as the "Evil Noblemen" and the "Queen's Watchdogs". They are tasked with eliminating any evidence of the royal family's wrongdoings by any means necessary. They are able to control and manage the underworld of the United Kingdom to avoid any information of its existence from reaching the general public. The current head of the family is Ciel Phantomhive, son of Earl Vincent and Lady Rachel Phantomhive who were murdered and their estate burned. In addition to the services they provide for the Queen, the Phantomhive family runs a toy and confectionery company called Funtom Company. The estate currently has five servants, where their positions as servants is a front with their real jobs protecting the Phantomhive Estate. Baldoroy serves as the household cook. Finnian is the gardener and Mey-Rin is the maid. Tanaka has served under Earl Vincent and Lady Rachel, but has not been seen doing any work during his service under Ciel. Sebastian Michaelis, a demon, acts as the butler. Lady Rachel and Earl Phantomhive each have one sister, both who have married and become parts of other noble families before the events of the plot. Madame Red, born as Angelina Dalles, married into the Barnett family. She commits the murders investigated in the Jack the Ripper case and is killed by her accomplice after she is exposed. Marchioness Frances married Marquis Middleford. Her daughter Elizabeth is engaged to Ciel.
Baldoroy
Baldoroy (バルドロイ, Barudoroi?), usually referred to as Baldo, is the household cook of American descent. He rarely produces anything edible as he uses weaponry such as flamethrowers to cook and believes cooking is an art requiring explosions. Sebastian believes anything he creates is made up of charcoal and carcinogens. Baldoroy pursues cooking to learn how to slow down, as he states cooking takes patience to master. He used to be an English soldier whose entire platoon was wiped out, leaving him to be the only survivor. While terrible at cooking, he is shown to be capable of taking advantage of his surroundings, such as using fine quality flour to create a dust explosion. At the anime's conclusion, it is unknown whether he is alive or dead, although it is noted he was breathing before he collapsed. He is voiced by Hiroki Touchi in the anime adaption and Rikiya Koyama on the drama CD.[1][2]
Finnian
Finnian (フィニアン, Finian?), often called Finny, is a gardener. However, it seems every time he tends to the garden it is killed through an accident caused by his clumsiness. He is portrayed as an innocent, child-like character, but is dubbed an idiot by Sebastian. Finnian displays feats of superhuman strength, which he tries to suppress from fear of hurting others and risk of sabotaging his work. The sequence S-012 are tattooed to the back of his neck and are covered by his straw hat. He works as a gardener to spend as much time as possible outside because he was not able to do so before, and explains that he loves working for Ciel because he does not give him injections, kill his friends or lock him in a cage. He was experimented on to increase physical strength before the events of the story until he was rescued by Sebastian. He seems to have feelings for Angela because her kindness and beauty until he saw her true dominatrix personality. At the anime's conclusion, it is unknown whether he is alive or dead, although it is noted he was breathing before he collapsed. He is voiced by Kaji Yūki in the anime adaption and Motoki Takagi on the drama CD.[1][2]
Mey-Rin
Mey-Rin (メイリン, Meirin?) is a clumsy maid whose cracked glasses do nothing to improve her clumsiness. However, she refuses to purchase a new pair as they are the first thing Ciel bought for her. Sebastian believes her main problem is her intelligence and not her poor eyesight. She seems to have a crush on Sebastian as she is even clumsier when Sebastian is watching. Mey-Rin used to be a sniper who did not use a scope, due to her sharp far-sighted vision caused by her ill-fitting glasses. She is also physically fit as she can use a sniper rifle like a hand gun and keeps hundreds loaded at once to decrease reload time. At the anime's conclusion, it is unknown whether she is alive or dead, although it is noted she was breathing before she collapsed. She is voiced by Katou Emiri in the anime adaption and Orikasa Fumiko on the drama CD.[1][2]
Tanaka
Tanaka (タナカ?) is the house steward who has served under the former Master Phantomhive. He was present when Ciel's parents were killed and was stabbed in the back during the incident and as a result, rarely does any work. Sebastian seems to respect him the most out of all the staff. He is usually seen drinking from a Japanese tea cup. Despite his appearance, Tanaka is capable of killing intruders. In the anime, he is commonly in a super deformed form. When he is not, he is as capable a servant as Sebastian. As the series progresses, he is seen less often in a super deformed form. Fuijimura Shunji in the anime adaption and Mugihito on the drama CD[1][2]
Pluto
Appearing in the anime adaption, Pluto (プルートゥ, Purūtō?), also known as the devil Dog, is a large dog that terrorizes the town of Houndsworth until Sebastian tames him and brings him to the Phantomhive Estate. He can breathe fire, walk through barriers and shape-shift into a human. As a human, he retains dog-like qualities. Although Sebastian hates dogs, Pluto has taken a liking to him and only listens to Sebastian's orders. He has ties to the organization that killed Ciel's parents, as he is seen resting by the feet of a member and licking his hand and has been with Angela prior to living at the Phantomhive Estate. When Ash uses him to set fire to the Estate and burn London, Ciel orders his staff to kill Pluto. Takafumi Yamaguchi in the anime adaption[2]
[edit] Nobles
Madame Red
Madame Red (マダム・レッド, Madamu Reddo?), born Angelina Durless (アンジェリーナ・ダレス, Anjerīna Daresu?), is Ciel's aunt. As her title suggests, she is known for her red appearance and clothing. Initially she hated her red hair, which she inherited from her father, until Ciel's father stated he liked it. Angelina fell in love with him and became distraught when she found her sister was marrying him. Madame Red later married Baron Barnett, who treats her lovingly and gently, stating that he does not mind that she harbors feelings for another. She obtained a medical license against the wishes of her parents and practices at the Royal London Hospital. After a carriage accident in which her husband was killed, her womb and unborn child had to be removed. This causes her great strife as a doctor because she regularly performs abortions on prostitutes as they believe having a child is troublesome. She later kills her patients with Grelle Sutcliff and the two become known as Jack the Ripper. However, she cannot kill Ciel as she holds him as dear as her own son and because of this, she is killed by Grelle. She is voiced by Romi Paku in the anime adaption and Masako Katsuki on the drama CD.[1][2]
Lau
Lau (劉, Rau?, Chinese Pinyin: Liú) is a Chinese noble, President of the British Branch of a Chinese trading company, and friend to the Phantomhive family. He is also part of the Shanghai Mafia and runs an opium den. He is always smiling and his eyes are always closed. Lau often agrees to things before learning what is happening and jumps into conversations with helpful information only to later state he has no idea. He is also unaware his antics appear strange to others. However, he can be very coldblooded and cryptic and is willing to go further than Ciel would, such as having Lord West and his wife killed because he knew they'd try to cheat again. He is often seen with his personal assassin Ran-Mao (藍猫, Ranmao?, Chinese Pinyin: Lán-māo), a Chinese, doll-like girl referred to as his sister, although not by blood. Although she does not speak and is portrayed as emotionless, she is very loyal to him. In the anime adaption, Lau and Ran-mao are defeated by Ciel and Sebastian after they use the Earl's company to store and sell Lady Blanc opium in the guise of candy. Lau and Ran-mao then throw themselves into the River Thames. Lau is voiced by Koji Yusa in the anime adaption. Ran-Mao is voiced by Sayuri Yahagi.[2]
Prince Soma
Prince Soma Asman Kadar (ソーマ・アスマン・カダール, Sooma Asuman Kadaaru?) is a seventeen-year-old Indian prince. Unlike Ciel, he is spoiled and uses his parent's fortune for his personal needs and blames all of his problems on others. He bestowed his affections on Meena (ミーナ, Miina?), a beautiful maidservant who had served at his palace in India since his birth. He saw her as an older sister. However, she came to hate him due to his arrogance and ran away to England with Lord Harold West, a trader in Indian goods, wanting to be a rich wife, rather than an ordinary cook bound to her social class. During the course of his time in England, Soma begins to see things in a different perspective, realizing that he is blaming problems he caused on others. After learning Meena hated him for his ignorance, Prince Soma decided to stay with Ciel and learn how to act as a gentleman and even proclaims to be Ciel's best friend. He does not know that Meena and Lord West were both killed by Ramao on Lau's orders after they lost the curry contest and were planning to try again. Shortly after, Ciel has him and Agni manage his property in London, in order to keep them out of his way. He is voiced by Shinnosuke Tachibana in the anime adaption.[2]
Agni
Agni (アグニ, Aguni?) is the servant of Prince Soma, whom he sees and worships as a god. Agni was once a nobleman named Arshad who used his powers and wealth for his own desires to the point that he was to be hanged for his crimes. Before he was to die, Prince Soma offered him a new life with the death of his old self. He is able to fight on a par with Sebastian while using a fencing foil, a feat which briefly makes Ciel wonder if he is human until Sebastian confirms he is a human. The source of his martial prowess comes from his devotion to Prince Soma. Unlike Sebastian, however, he is able to see the good in the Phantomhive manor staff and assign them tasks where their skills will be of use. He is known as the "Right Hand of God" for his god-like skill at making curry. He betrays Prince Soma and becomes the chef for a curry contest for Lord West to keep him from revealing to Soma that Meena ran away from and hated the prince. Later, Agni reconciles with the prince. He is staying in the Phantomhive manor to learn to become a better servant from Sebastian's example, and even calls Sebastian his friend, something that surprises Sebastian as no one has ever referred to him as such before. Sebastian also takes Agni's advice on taking care of Ciel, much to the younger boy's annoyance. He is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in the anime adaption.[2]
[edit] Shinigami
Shinigami are in charge of deciding whether a dying soul should be allowed to continue living or to die. They must remain neutral and must not kill for enjoyment. In the manga, there are three shinigami introduced so far: Grelle Sutcliff, William Spears and Ronald Knox (ロナルド・ノックス, Ronarudo Nokkusu?). Grelle forges a partnership with Madame Red after witnessing her murder a former patient and helps her murder prostitutes. The two become known as Jack the Ripper. When they are exposed as the killers, William Spears comes to the human world to punish Grelle. Spears belongs to the Dispatch Management Division. Grelle's scythe is confiscated and Grelle does not reappear in the manga. Ronald Knox is portrayed as easy-going and social and uses a scythe in the shape of a lawn-mower. In the anime adaption, Undertaker is a legendary Shinigami in the Management level. He is highly respected by Spears. Although he is retired, Undertaker can access the Shinigami Library and alter the books. In the last episode of the anime adaption, the shinigami cut away tainted souls unfit to be kept in the Shinigami Library. So far all shinigami introduced have been shown to wear eyeglasses at some point in their life.
Grelle Sutcliffe
Grelle Sutcliffe (グレル・サトクリフ, Gureru Satokurifu?) is a flamboyant shinigami who works as Angelina Dalles' butler. He is initially portrayed as worthless and is often seen in the anime adaption trying to commit suicide after mishandling tasks. As a shinigami, he is characterized with red hair and shark-like teeth. Grelle often refers to himself as a female and verbalizes his infatuation with Sebastian, much to the latter's disgust. He meets Angelina while she is murdering a former patient. Grelle and Angelina forge a partnership and continue the murders. They are known as "Jack the Ripper". Grelle's shinigami scythe is illegally modified to look and function like a chainsaw. When cutting someone with his Scythe, their past memories are played out like a video reel; this is referred to as "Cinematic Record". Sebastian almost kills Grelle with the Grim Reaper's own scythe, but he is stopped by William Spears. William beats Grelle and takes him back to headquarters. In the manga, Grelle has not appeared since. However, he makes a reappearance in the anime adaption, where his role is lengthened through missions William assigns him to investigate. His scythe is confiscated and Grelle has to rely on small scissors able to cut through anything. At the anime's conclusion, William returns his chainsaw scythe so that he can help the other shinigami destroy the tainted souls caused by Angela and Ash. He is voiced by Jun Fukuyama in the anime adaption and the second drama CD.[2][3] His last name is similar to that of Peter Sutcliffe, nicknamed the Yorkshire Ripper for murdering thirteen women.
William T. Spears
William T. Spears (ウィリアム・T・スピアーズ, Wiriamu T Supiaazu?) is a high-ranking death god and belongs to the Dispatch Management Division. He is portrayed as emotionless. William comes to the human world to take Grelle back for punishment. He has a strong, open hatred for demons, to the point of becoming disgusted with himself after apologizing to Sebastian for Grelle's behavior. His scythe is a double-sided clipper that is able to extend to unknown lengths. In the anime adaption, it appears to be the standard scythe. He is not as proficient at blending in with humans as Grelle or Sebastian, often openly talking about shinigami and demons, but the people that hear this think of him as a jokester. He is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama in the anime adaption.[2]
[edit] Noah's Ark Circus
The Noah's Ark Circus (ノアの方舟・サーカス, Noanohakobune Saakasu?) is a traveling circus created by Baron Kelvin, who is referred to simply as Father by the circus performers. The members have the been rejected by society for various reasons. The circus is investigated by Ciel upon Queen Victoria's request because children disappear from cities around the same time the circus visit.[4] The performers are divided into two tiers. The first tier is composed of the very best performers who perform regularly; the second tier is made up of newcomers. The first tier has eight performers referred to as Joker, Dagger, Snake, Beast, Doll, Wendy, Peter and Jumbo, all of which, with the exception of Snake, have come from the same workhouse.[5] Joker is the leader when the circus is traveling. Beast (ビースト, Biisuto?) is an animal tamer and seems to have feelings for Joker, although she does not show this in public. Dagger (ダガー, Dagaa?) is a knife thrower and is infatuated with Beast, often fawning over and presenting her with gifts. Snake (スネーク, Suneeku?) can understand snakes and is supposedly half-snake himself; his snakes guard the first tier member's tent and speak through him. Doll (ドール, Dooru?) is a tightrope walker, but she also pretends to be a new, male performer called Freckles (ソバカス, Sobakasu?). Wendy (ウエンディ, Uendei?) and Peter (ピーター, Piitaa?) are a pair of trapeze artists and Jumbo (ジャンボ, Janbo?) is a fire eater.[4][6] Except for Snake, Joker and Doll, all of the first tier performers are killed by Baldoroy, Finnian and Mey-Rin when they attack the Phantomhive manor in an attempt to kidnap Ciel. Doll later attempts to kill Ciel. Afterwards, Ciel and Sebastian went to check out the workhouse to find all of the children, only to find out the place didn't exist and the building looked to have been deserted for many years. Ciel, Sebastian, and William join the circus to investigate for various reasons.[5][7]
Joker
Joker (ジョーカー, Jookaa?) is the leader of the circus when it is traveling and serves Baron Kelvin as a butler when he is at the manor. He recognized by his prosthetic skeleton arm and is initially portrayed as a very goofy person. However, he is actually strict and serious. Although he does not agree with some of Baron Kelvin's decisions, he follows every order given to him because he wants to protect his "brothers and sisters" in the workhouse. He, like every first tier performer, refers to Baron Kelvin as Father because the Baron took him off the streets as a child and raised him in addition to providing artificial limbs. Joker is unaware of the fact that the kidnapped children are used by Doctor as material for the prosthetics, nor did he know that the workhouse never existed. He dies of blood loss.
Baron Kelvin
Baron Kelvin (男爵・ケルヴィン, Danshaku Kerubin?) is the creator of the Noah's Ark Circus and is referred to as Father by the tier one performers. Except for his left eye, his entire face is covered by bandages. He seems to have a great love for children and uses his circus as a way to kidnap them. He then brainwashes them and has act them as his servants. However, he does not care for their well being and even finds it entertaining when he has them die gruesomely while performing in a circus without training. He knew Ciel as a small boy and recreates the room Ciel was branded and caged in as a child. He is infatuated with Ciel, blushing and saying it is like a dream to have Ciel beside him. It is insinuated that because of this infatuation he has kidnaps children. When he first met Ciel and he believed he was too ugly and underwent many surgeries for Ciel, only to believe it a waste when he hears the Phantomhive were killed. He is later killed by Ciel and his mansion is burned by Sebastian.
Doctor
Doctor (先生, Sensei?) is the kind, wheelchair-bound doctor who cares for the performers of the circus. However, this is later revealed to be a ruse as he can walk and is quite sadistic. He hand carves the prosthetic limbs used by some of the first tier performers from a unknown strong material, later revealed to be a special bone china using the bones of children. He has Kelvin use his power and money to provide him with the resources he needed to perfect his prosthesis research and has him kidnap children for the prosthetics. He is killed by Sebastian under Ciel's orders.
[edit] Others
Undertaker
Undertaker (アンダーテイカー, Andaateikaa?) is, as his name suggests, a funeral director. He often works with corpses resulting from movements in the underworld of the United Kingdom and acts as Ciel's informant. He seems to have known Ciel's father, Vincent, as he appears as one of the "Evil Nobles". He is a rather eccentric man, almost always wearing a smile, and wishes to hear a funny joke for his services instead of receiving any of the "Queen's money". He shows a strong disdain for the Queen. In the anime adaptation, he is a legendary and retired Shinigami ranked in the Management level and is highly respected by William Spears. Although he is retired, he still can access the Shinigami Library and alter the books, which he often does not return. His scythe is akin to that of the stereotypical Grim Reaper scythe. He is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in the anime adaption.[2]
Elizabeth Middleford
Elizabeth Middleford (エリザベス・ミッドフォード, Erizabesu Middofoodo?) is the daughter of Marchioness Frances Middleford and is both Ciel's cousin and fiancée. She is a very happy and upbeat girl. She has known Ciel for a long time and cares deeply for him, trying her best to see him smile again. Ciel sees her as an important friend and a girl that he needs to protect because he says that he does not want to lose anything important again. It has been shown a few times on how much Ciel cares cares for her, such as throwing himself in front of her to protect her from a bear in the manga, how he tried his best to save Elizabeth from Drocell, and also drying her tears after she broke his ring despite how upset he had been. She is voiced by Yukari Tamura in the anime adaption and Chiwa Saitō on the drama CD.[2]
Viscount of Druitt
The Viscount of Druitt, Lord Aleister Chamber (アレイスト・チェンバー, Areisuto Chenbaa?), is a noble who is known for his taste in fine art, wine and food. He becoms a main suspect in the Jack the Ripper murder case. During the investigation, he is found kidnapping women and selling their body parts on the black market. He is later arrested by Scotland Yard, although he is suspected to have bribed his way out of prison when he is again seen in public. He graduated from medical school, but does not practice medicine. He relates anything he sees as beautiful to a woman, and is particularly infatuated with a mysterious girl he met at a ball, who was in fact Ciel in disguise. He was most probably based from Montague John Druitt who was suspected of being Jack the Ripper. He is voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki in the anime adaption.[2]
Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria (ヴィクトリア女王, Bikutoria Joō?) is the Queen of the United Kingdom and has been described as having great beauty and grace. Despite this, she is a bit eccentric, this is seen when she enters a curry contest while riding a horse. After the death of her husband, she does not appear in public often and begins to cry hysterically whenever he is mentioned. In the anime adaption, she nearly attempted suicide because of the grief until Ash approached her. Ash gave her youth and attached part of her husband's skin from her neck to her clavicle area. Because the skin continues to rot, it causes her great pain. When Ash tries to fix the problem, she refuses to let him. She also plays a villainous role, becoming part of the Organization for everlasting youth and is the one who ordered the destruction of the Phantomhive Family. She later dies and a look-alike is placed on the throne. In the manga, she is served by John Brown (ジョン・ブラウン, Jon Buraun?) who wears large goggles. He spends most of his role trying to keep up with her and calming her hysterical fits of tears.
Fred Abberline
Fred Abberline (フレッド・アバーライン, Fureddo Abaarain?) is a young officer of Scotland Yard. In the anime adaption, he is portrayed as one who truly believes in the justice system. He wishes to make London a place where it is safe to have a family and plans to propose to his pregnant girlfriend. Like Ciel, he had to go through hard times to reach his current situation. Despite this, Ciel describes him as someone who walks in the light, whereas Ciel walks in the darkness. At first, Abberline does not trust Ciel and his position as the Queen's Watchdog, but later joins him as an ally. He is killed by Lau by using his body as a human shield to protect Ciel.[8] His role in the manga adaption is significantly shorter and he is portrayed with a mustache. He is voiced by Hisayoshi Suganuma.[2] Abberline is modeled after the real life Frederick Abberline, the Chief Inspector for the London Metropolitan Police and a prominent investigator of the Jack the Ripper murders.
Angela and Ash
The anime adaption introduces a hermaphrodite angel with two personalities, initially introduced as two people named Angela (アンジェラ, Anjera?) and Ash (アッシュ, Asshu?). Angela is introduced as a maid who is treated poorly in public by her master the Lord Henry Barrymore of Houndsworth. Finnian is infatuated with her beauty and seeming kindness, until he learns of her dominatrix personality. She seems to have the desire to be with Sebastian. When the Angela persona is in control, she wants him to recognize her as a woman and has a place beside her in her bid for world domination. Ash is introduced as Queen Victoria's butler who delivers all of her requests to the Phantomhive Head. His appearance is the opposite of Sebastian's; Ash wears white suit and has white hair. He is connected to the organization that killed Ciel's parents and seems to be the leader as he is able to ask Scotland Yard to arrest Sebastian. Like other members, he has an obsession of purifying souls "unclean" with negative emotions. Eventually, he falls into insanity, leading Sebastian to comment he might be a fallen angel. He is killed by Sebastian's true form. He fights with a sword that resembles a fencing foil, which is strong enough to cut through steel. Angela and Ash are voiced by Akiko Yajima and Satoshi Hino respectively.[2]

Extended Flamehaze month???!!

...

Yeah!!We, the Flamehazes decided to extend the Flamhaze month up to December.
We have reasons for this:

one, we all know that all the westerners (especially SSCs) are very busy about school purposes;
two, we are lacking time for the preparations;

and three, we have no fixed venue for the events.

We are very sorry for the problem and we are hoping for your considerations.

Gomen nasai to domo arigatou!!!

"SPECIAL APPEARANCE"

MAJOR

Kindergarten ~ First grade

Contains: volume 01 chapter 01 - volume 03 chapter 06

Goro's father, Shigeharu Honda, was a pitcher struggling between the major and minor teams of the NPB. Nonetheless, Goro looked up to his father, wishes to be a professional baseball player just like his father. Aside from his father, Goro was very close to two other people—Momoko Hoshino and Toshiya Sato. Momoko was Goro's kindergarten teacher, and especially watched out for Goro because there are no other kids of Goro's age at the kindergarten. Toshiya was another kid in the neighborhood, the only one Goro could find of his own age, and whom Goro taught baseball to.

The father and son were struck a cruel blow when Honda's arm injury prevents him from continuing his baseball career as a pitcher. Goro was especially shaken by the fact that his father wouldn't be able to continue as a baseball player anymore. To Honda, his son and baseball are all he has left in his life (his wife died 2 years ago). For his son's sake, Honda took up his best friend's advice, revived his batting instincts, and successfully transformed into a slugger. Amidst all this turmoil, Momoko was drawn deeper and deeper into the family's life. Eventually, Honda proposed to Momoko.

Right when Honda established himself in the major team Yokohama Marine Stars, the Tokyo Shiants signed a contract with the American MLB player, Joe Gibson, famous for his huge physical build and fast balls. When the Marine Stars with Honda and the Shiants with Gibson finally met on the field, Gibson struck out every single Marine Stars batter, except for Honda. Honda managed to touch the ball on his first at-bat, and at his second at-bat hit a home run off Gibson's 100-mile (160 km) best pitch. After Honda's home run, the Marine Stars coach launched a series of bunt attacks, scoring additional runs, and psychologically shaking up Gibson who considers the tactic unsportsmanlike. When it was Honda's third at-bat, Gibson has completely lost mental focus, and accidentally pitched a 99-mile (159 km) dead ball hitting Honda's head. The umpire immediately called Gibson off the mound, though Honda quickly got back onto his feet and continued with the game. Honda's excellent play made him the headline of major newspapers. The next morning Honda died due to internal bleeding in his skull, leaving his heartbroken son and fiancé behind.

Little League

Three years has passed since Momoko Hoshino, unmarried, adopted Goro as her own son upon Honda's death. Goro began school as a fourth grader, and was finally old enough to join the local little league team, the Mifune Dolphins. However, the local kids were mostly interested in soccer, and Goro had to get new friends he made at school to join in order to have enough members to keep the team from being abolished.

Goro showed himself to be an extremely gifted baseball player. So much in fact that the Dolphins coach hated to see Goro waste away his potential with the other less-talented Dolphins players. The coach recommended Goro to join the nearby Yokohama Little team instead, which has better players, coach, and resources. When Goro visited, he discovered that not only was his old buddy Toshiya at Yokohama Little, but his own father, Shigeharu Honda, had been a member of the Yokohama Little with the current coach. Goro was torn, because if he were to follow his father's footsteps, that meant he would be abandoning the friends he asked to join the Mifune Dolphins. Goro had a big fight with Momoko over the issue, and Momoko sought advice from Hideki Shigeno, Honda's old buddy and teammate. While meeting with Shigeno, Momoko coughed blood, and was hostipalized. Whlie it turned out it was just a gastric ulcer, it made Goro realize the living people are much more important than the dead.

At that time, Joe Gibson had just returned to the MLB after pitching in Japan for three years. He sent an invitation to Goro to travel to America, all expenses paid, and watch the MLB All-Star game, where Gibson was going to be the starting pitcher for the National League. At the game, he declared to the American League's player that he would only pitch fast balls. Gibson threw 18 strikes, not a single slugger of the AL's top rotation could touch Gibson's pitch despite knowing what's coming, and Gibson earned standing ovation from the audience. This was Gibson's own way to show Goro how great a slugger Honda had been, as Honda had hit a home run off Gibson's best pitch in a duel of only fast balls. After the game, Gibson allowed Goro to throw a hardball at him, where ever Goro wants to, if it would make Goro feel any better. Goro responded that he would postpone this "punishment" until the day he could pitch as well as Gibson, which was Goro's own way of acknowledging Gibson's greatness.

Back in Japan, with renewed determination, Goro led the Mifune Dolphins through various trials and practice matches, intending to defeat Yokohama Little, the best team in the region. At the end of the season, Goro's adoptive mother marries Shigeno Hideki and the new family moves to Fukuoka when Shigeno is traded from the Marine Stars.

Junior High

Goro moves back to Mifune when his stepfather is traded back to the Blue Oceans and finds his little league friends grown up and attending Mifune East Junior High School. He surprises his friends when he tells them that he has been playing soccer and doesn't plan on playing for the junior high baseball team, revealing that he had destroyed his shoulder out in Fukuoka. Goro changes his mind after confronting a bully who is threatening one of his friends. Together, Goro and his friend Komori Daisuke rebuild the junior high baseball team. The team becomes strong enough to enter the regional junior high tournament and, once again he finds himself playing against his friend and rival Sato Toshiya, who plays on the Tomonoura Junior High School team. Mifune eventually beats Tomonoura in a tight game and Goro and Toshiya vow to play on the same high school team together.

Kaido High School selection

After the tournament, Goro, his friend Komori, and Toshiya decide to try out for the baseball team of the prestigious private high school, Kaido. Komori is disqualified in the Kaido baseball club test and is forced to go to Mifune High. Goro and Toshiya get through the first round of the test. After the test there is an academic examnation which Goro also "succeeds in" as it is a test of determination. Immediately after they graduate middle school they are sent to Dream island where they have 6 months of ongoing hard training. He then proceeds to the Atsugi campus where he defeats the Varsity team and quits despite the anger of the 2nd in charge.

Kaido High School

Goro and Toshiya make the junior varsity team and spend a year and half together as teammates. However, in their second year, Goro reveals that his true desire is to challenge the excellent players of Kaido instead of play on the same team as them. His friend Toshiya is hurt by Goro's decision, but respects him for it. The season ends with Goro leading the junior varsity team to victory over a scrimmage against the varsity team, and with Goro quitting Kaido High School to play for another team.

Seishū High School

Contains: volume 33 chapter 03 - volume 46 chapter 10

Goro has returned home after quitting Kaido. Upon his arrival, his mother voices her displeasure with the fact that he did not consult with her about his leaving. She insisted Goro to be accountable for his actions and to accept the responsibility of paying the application fees on which ever schools he chooses to enroll in. Goro's enrollment had been refused by several schools due to the assistant coach of Kaido (Egashira) threatening to sue the other schools. Goro was able to finally avoid Egashira's interference by enrolling in Seishū High. Having been an all girls school until just two years ago, Seishū didn't have a baseball team. Goro enrolls, determined to create a baseball team from scratch. Eventually, Seishū reaches the quarterfinals against Kaido. Despite extending the game into extra innings and striking out both Sato and Mayumura, Goro eventually falls after exhaustion. He loses to Kaido in the end.

Minor league baseball

Contains: volume 47 chapter 01 - volume 54 chapter 02

Despite losing the match against Kaido, Seishū Highschool was the only team that actually put up a fight against the Koshien champion. As a result, Goro attracted the eyes of many scouts, including the Yokohama Blue Ocean and the Tokyo Warriors. However, upon learning that Joe Gibson is still pitching in MLB, and dedicated his 300-win achievement to his "young friend in Japan", Goro lost any interest in Japanese professional baseball, and went to America to try out for the Major League. Meanwhile, Sato is recruited by the Tokyo Warriors, while Mayumura is recruited by the Yokohama Blue Ocean.

Goro's 95 mph (153 km/h) fastball (99 mph in anime), while ineffective against Major League sluggers, allowed Goro to start in Triple A instead of the rookie league. At first he joined the Cougars, but was soon released after a fight with Joe Gibson Jr. from the Oklahoma Falcons. Eventually, Goro joined the Memphis Bats, an aggressive but defensively weak baseball team. It was during this time that Goro begin seriously training to fully control his fastball.

In Triple A Goro found a new rival—Joe Gibson Jr, son of Joe Gibson and an outstanding slugger. Junior blamed the death of Goro's birth father as the cause of the tragedy that befell on his own family, and he challenged Goro to a bet: If Junior hit a home run off Goro, Goro is to return to Japan and never set foot on American soil again; On the other hand, if Goro can strike out Junior, then Junior will visit Goro's father's grave and apologize for his insults. Goro managed to strike out Junior with his fast ball, now at 100 mile/h (102 mph in anime), and lead his team to victory in the AAA Championship. (In the anime he did this twice)

Baseball World Cup

Contains: volume 54 chapter 03 - volume 65 chapter 10

After the baseball season was over, Goro returned to Japan. Shimizu finally told Goro her feelings for him, and they became a couple. On the other hand, Goro learned from Toshi that there is going to be a Baseball World Cup the following year hosted in America, and for the first time, Major League players will be allowed to compete in it. Due to Goro's impressive performances in the practice match between Rookies and the All-Star Japan team, he was selected as a replacement pitcher starting the second round of preliminaries. Goro pitched as the closer against Venezuela and South Korea, earning a win and a save respectively. Then Mayumura earned a win, pitching as closer against the Dominican Republic, advancing Japan to the semi-finals.

Shimizu came to America to cheer Goro on, and encountered Toshiya's younger sister, Miho Sato. The day before the semi-finals match against Cuba, Toshiya accidentally ran into his sister, and the traumatic memories of being abandoned by his parents 7 years ago were reawakened. Toshiya's body went into involuntary shock, and was temporarily hospitalized. Miho felt guilty about the incident, but Toshiya called her on the phone, and asked her to come watch the next game. By knowing his sister is somewhere in the audience, Toshiya felt he would be able to do his best. Toshiya made several excellent plays against Cuba's aggressive offensive in the semi-finals, and Goro got the win as the closer.

After the Cuba game, Gibson Jr. revealed to the Team USA's manager as well as Goro that his father, Joe Gibson, had angina pectoris. Junior hoped that the manager and Goro might be able to dissuade Gibson from getting on the mound and potentially kill himself. However, with players mostly in a "exhibition game" mentality, Gibson got on the mound in the 8th inning in the USA vs Venezuela semi-finals, risking his heart to awaken the baseball spirit of his teammates.

The following day, Gibson collapsed during practice session, and Goro rushed to the hospital to see Gibson. Gibson revealed to Goro that in a chance meeting with Momoko 10 years ago, he asked her why she had not accepted any monetary compensation from him. Momoko smiled gently, and asked Gibson to remain a top-class baseball player until Goro grows up, so that Goro could be proud of having a father who hit a home run from such a great pitcher, and that would be enough for her and for Goro. Momoko's kind words had been the pillar that supported and drove Gibson all these years, but he felt if he could not complete this Baseball World Cup, and play against Goro on the mound, he would have failed Goro and Momoko. Goro comforted Gibson, telling him that he had done enough, and to just watch Goro and Junior's showdown on TV.

The Japan vs USA finals game began with Japan taking a five run lead, prompting Gibson to leave the hospital and went to the stadium to cheer his teammates on by their side. Japan had to send out Goro in the 8th inning to protect their remaining 1 run lead, but Junior scored a home run off Goro's 100-mile (160 km) fast ball. The game went into extra innings, and Gibson walked onto the mound again, determined to lead USA to victory. But Goro was very determined to strike out Gibson Jr.. And Goro pitched his fastest pitch in his life at 103 mph. But USA won in the very last inning.

Major League Baseball

Contains: volume 66 chapter 01 -

As the new MLB season began, Goro performed extremely well for the Hornets in the exhibition matches. On his first official MLB match, he pitched a no-hit no-run game up until the 8th inning, when he suddenly lost control. On his second game, his pitches started to go wild by the 5th inning. Suspecting yips, his catcher Keen stopped Goro from voluntarily stepping off the mound, gambling on the chance that Goro can overcome his fears with a new success. Unfortunately, Goro ended up throwing at the batter in the head, and was ejected by the umpire. In his third game Goro was unable to retire a single batter. He was removed from the game in the first inning and sent back to AAA Bats until his situation improves.

Believing that Goro's defeat at the hands of Gibson Jr. was the cause of his yips, the Hornets sent Goro to Billy Oliver, a sports psychologist, for treatment. Soon after Goro recovers from his yips. Later on, Gibson retires after getting defeated by Goro's home run and the Hornet's. (Vol 69)
